Come and Join the Conversation
Go anywhere in Logan County and eventually the
conversation will turn to the topic of drugs in our community.
Prescription drug abuse, methamphetamine, meth labs, drug dealing, driving
under the influence, these subjects and more will come up. People will
tell you their stories and experiences with either family, friends or
neighbors. Without a doubt alcohol and other drugs are a significant issue
effecting all of southern WV, as throughout the U.S.
Every community is effected by alcohol and
other drugs to one degree or another, but in some communities drug
problems thrive due to a perception of hopelessness, abandonment and a
sense of loss deep within the soul of a community. People sense they have
no better choice for happiness than to chase after a chemically induced
solution.
Communities of faith provide a place of
refuge, a place where real choices for life can be made. Congregations and
clergy need to learn about addiction and join in partnership with other
groups, organizations and agencies already working to reduce AOD usage.
Congregations need to join the ongoing conversation to save our
communities by forming a united voice of compassion, caring and grace to
our brethren struggling to make meaningful choices for life to break the
bonds of addiction.
The impact of addiction on our community must be a central focus of
ministry in our congregations, because our neighbors, friends and family
members very lives depend upon it. As people of faith we must trust in our
ability to labor with God and others to create a drug-free community, then
together we might rejoice because what was lost has now been found. So I
encourage you and your congregations to join the conversation.
The web site of the First Presbyterian Church
in Logan will provide information and links to help congregations join the
conversation and learn how to respond. Check back frequently to learn more
as we add resources to this site. |

NIDA for Teens:
The Science Behind Drug Abuse
teens.drugabuse.gov
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a
component of the National Institutes of Heath (NIH), created this Web site
to educate adolescents ages 11 through 15 (as well as their parents and
teachers) on the science behind drug abuse. NIDA enlisted the help of
teens in developing the site to ensure that the content addresses
appropriate questions and timely concerns.
Recognizing that teens want to be treated as equals, NIDA
scientists were careful not to preach about the dangers of drug use.
Rather, the site delivers science-based facts about how drugs affect the
brain and body so that kids will be armed with better information to make
healthy decisions. |

National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month
www.recoverymonth.gov/2007/
Recovery Month is an annual observance that takes
place during the month of September.
The Recovery Month observance highlights the societal benefits of
substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers
and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its
forms is possible. The observance also encourages citizens to take action
to help expand and improve the availability of effective substance abuse
treatment for those in need. Each year a new theme, or emphasis, is
selected for the observance. Recovery Month provides a platform to
celebrate people in recovery and those who serve them.

Confident Kids Support Groups
www.confidentkids.com
Confident Kids is a Bible based support group
program offering a life skills curriculum that helps families with
children ages 4 - 12 years old deal with the stresses of living in today's
world. Through games, skits and small group discussions, children learn
important life skills while experiencing a safe place to talk about their
life experiences. In a concurrent group, parents learn to apply these same
skills at home, while experiencing a safe place to share their stories, as
well. In both groups, participants grow as they discover they are not
alone in their pain. |
